2027 Honda Civic Hatchback: Cargo, Hybrid MPG and Use

October 9th, 2026 by

Honda says the 2027 Civic Hatchback is starting to arrive at Honda dealerships nationwide, with a new trim and a new drive mode joining the lineup. If you split your week between a High Desert commute and weekend runs to Big Bear or the grocery store, the hatchback body style may be the Civic that fits your life. Here is what Honda has confirmed so far.

  • 47 mpg combined: the EPA-estimated rating Honda lists for Civic Hatchback hybrid models (50 city / 44 highway).
  • 34 mpg combined: the EPA-estimated rating for the 2.0-liter gas hatchback (30 city / 38 highway).
  • 1 new trim: Honda’s new Sport-L is expected to join the lineup by the end of the year.

Hatchback or sedan?

Both body styles share the same 2027 Civic story: a 2.0-liter gas engine or Honda’s hybrid system, the Honda Sensing® suite on every model, and the new Sport-L trim on the way. The differences come down to how you use the car:

  • Hatchback: a rear hatch in place of a separate trunk. Honda builds the Civic Hatchback at its Greensburg, Indiana, auto plant.
  • Sedan: a traditional trunk, and the only body style that offers the LX trim in Honda’s 2027 lineup. Honda builds the Civic Sedan in Alliston, Ontario, Canada.

Cargo and everyday space

For the 2026 Civic Hatchback, Honda lists 24.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, along with a 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback. Honda’s 2027 announcement does not repeat cargo figures, so ask us to confirm the 2027 numbers before you count on them for a specific load. The easiest way to judge is to bring the things you actually carry, such as a stroller, sports gear, or a camping bin, and try them in the back during a visit.

Fuel economy

Honda publishes these EPA-estimated ratings for the 2027 Civic Hatchback.

Powertrain City / Highway / Combined (mpg)
2.0-liter gas with CVT 30 / 38 / 34
Hybrid 50 / 44 / 47

Based on 2027 EPA mileage ratings. Use for comparison purposes only. Your mileage will vary depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle, driving conditions, battery pack age and condition, and other factors.

The hybrid’s city rating is noticeably higher than the gas engine’s, which is worth a look if much of your driving is stop-and-go around town. On long highway stretches the gap narrows, so think about your typical week when you compare.

What’s new for 2027

  • Sport-L trim: according to Honda, it adds leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, and more, with the 2.0-liter engine. It is expected by the end of the year.
  • Honda S+ Shift: added to the Civic Sport Touring Hybrid. It simulates a performance transmission with virtual rev-matched downshifts, gear holding, and enhanced engine sounds, and was first introduced on the 2026 Honda Prelude.

Safety and driver assistance

Honda states that all 2027 Civic models come with the Honda Sensing® suite, including Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Pedestrian Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Forward Collision Warning, and Road Departure Mitigation with Lane Departure Warning. According to Honda, Sport models also include blind spot information with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. These systems are driver aids and do not replace attentive driving.

Honest limits

  • A compact hatchback is a great fit for pavement and everyday cargo, but it is not an off-road vehicle. If your weekends head toward the trails around Stoddard Valley or Johnson Valley, ask us about our SUVs and trucks.
  • The Sport-L trim is expected by the end of the year and may not be available yet.
  • Honda’s 2027 announcement does not list horsepower, torque, or cargo volume. The cargo figure above is from Honda’s 2026 Civic Hatchback materials, so please confirm 2027 details with us.
  • Hybrid highway mpg is lower in the hatchback than in the sedan, according to Honda’s EPA-estimated ratings.
